If you believe the best things in life are free, you are going to love all the no-cost arts and cultural happenings in Montclair. Whether you enjoy free music while you dine at Ruthies Bar-B-Q, pack a picnic and a blanket for Essex County’s Summer Music concert series, stop in for Magnolia's Weekly Wine Tasting or enjoy a visit to historic Van Vleck House and Gardens, there's plenty to do on a budget, and on a whim, in Montclair.

Essex County’s free Summer Music concert series offers a diverse lineup of performers who will take center stage in venues throughout the historic park system. Pack a blanket, enjoy the cool evening breeze, and dance to the sounds of summer Fridays at 7:30pm! See below for the Brookdale Park and Kips' Castle schedule.

The Chocolate Path- Every Saturday stop at the tasting bar to find out which chocolatier they will be profiling. Delicious samples all day long.

Magnolia's Weekly Wine Tasting- Saturday afternoon, 2 to 6pm. Magnolia's will be offering a taste of four excellent wines, 2 red, 2 white from Terredora Di Paolo, one of the leading wineries in the Campania region of Italy. Owned by a branch of the renowned Mastroberardino family, they have been making award-winning wines for generations. Come in and taste the fun.

Visit Montclair Art Museum's Family Learning Lab
. The 3rd floor Family Learning Lab to explore the exhibition Cézanne and American Modernism through a hands-on art project. Lying to the east of his home in Aix-en-Provence, France, Mont Sainte-Victoire was a favorite subject of Paul Cézanne. He painted the mountain in a series of works from different angles, at different times, and in different weather. Visitors are invited to create their own versions of this famous scene.

Van Vleck House and Gardens - Some of the most beautiful flora in Northern New Jersey fills the gardens of Van Vleck House, including a large collection of rhododendrons. a majestic wisteria that blooms in May, and lovely perennial beds. The estate covers almost 6 acres and is a prime example of the homes originally built in Montclair.   The grounds are maintained with the help of volunteers so admission is always free for exploring the grounds.

Free Fun Run & Bike Tours of historical sites in Montclair. Visit Fleet Feet and DiamondCycle for a tour prepared by local experts from the Montclair Historical Society.

Montclair's newest venue for sharing your talent is Studio 12, upstairs at 12 Church Street, every Wednesday night from 7:30pm. Listen to local faves like Meg Beattie Patrick, Greg Spinelli, Diana Liddy, Carrie Cantor and others play rock, blues & jazz, or take your turn at the open mic. No cover, light menu, dessert and beverages available.

Acoustic Showcase Night at Tierney's Tavern at 136-138 Valley Road. Every Thursday night at 9 pm, the mic is open to anyone and everyone.

Fine Art is always free. Montclair's galleries are open and free to the public.  (see the Gallery Map & Guide for specific locations). BrassWorks on Grove, Midland Gallery, Pat Gail Gallery, Gallery 51, Gallery Loupe, Essex Fine Arts, Jacklyn Kling Gallery, and Studio Montclair's Block Gallery. The Montclair Arts Council has also sponsored five public art installations (also listed on the Gallery Map).  The latest is an intricate bronze door piece by artist/blacksmith Charlie Spademan at Bangz, Montclair's newly-reoped premiere salon and spa, 23 S. Fullerton Ave.
